World’s First 108 Megapixel Smartphone Camera Sensor

Is your phone clicking photos that are not too clear? Looking to purchase a new phone with greater depth and better clarity? Samsung, in a partnership with Chinese Smartphone Company Xiaomi, has recently announced to launch the world’s highest camera sensor in a phone at 108 megapixels.

Just four months back, the company collaborated with Xiaomi to launch Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and ISOCELL Bright GW2 with 0.8µm image sensor lineup which allowed users to capture photos on their cell phone with a high resolution of 64 megapixels and 48 megapixels respectively. Samsung has now decided to expand its 0.8µm to 108 image sensor lineup ISOCELL Bright HMX which is known to be the first mobile phone ever to go beyond 100 million pixels resolution.

The new phone provides a resolution that is equivalent to the resolution of a high-end DSLR camera. The Executive Vice President of Sensor Business at Samsung Electronics said in a statement, “Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and deliver unparalleled color reproduction.”

The higher end sensor of this Samsung device is the first phone to adopt a 1/1.33-inch size. Comparing it to the previous sensors, it has the ability to absorb more light in low-light conditions due to the Smart-ISO that has the ability to automatically switch to lower ISO setting in order to improve the clarity and depth of an image when surrounded by brighter environments. The phone is further capable of imitating big-pixel sensors with the support of Tetracell technology. The videos captured with the latest sensor in HMX is able to capture field-of-view resolutions up to 6016×3384 (6K) at 30-frames-persecond (fps).

In this era, smartphones within the industry have reached a stage where there is a high level of competition between a good phone and a better phone simply based upon its camera and the ability to take ‘‘clear” pictures.

Samsung is known within the industry to try variations with its phones and pixels trying to help the users capture pictures that look like the actual subject in real life. Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is scheduled to go into mass production by the end of this month and we can expect it to be launched by the end of 2019.
